South Sudan’s veterans lose primaries as monitors warn over polls

At least five veteran South Sudanese politicians, including former ministers and party leaders, lost primaries within the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) ahead of the December 2026 polls. The movement held nominations using a controversial system in which party delegates queue behind their preferred candidate. The process appears to be pushing several longtime political figures aside.

Kentucky Republican Representative Thomas Massie urged Donald Trump to dismiss Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to prevent his impeachment.
