At least 64 people were killed and nearly 80 injured, around 50 of them seriously, when high-speed Renfe and Iryo trains collided near Urda in Castile-La Mancha. The crash occurred at 8:54 a.m. on the Madrid–Andalusia line, with more than 500 passengers aboard the two trains. Emergency services deployed firefighters, three helicopters and two mobile intensive-care units, and the most seriously injured were taken to hospitals in the region and neighboring provinces. The disaster struck less than a month before Spain’s general election and led to the suspension of the election campaign.
