Spain: At least 69 dead after two high-speed trains collide

At least 69 people were killed and dozens injured when a Renfe AVE train collided with an Iryo train stopped on the same track near Urda, in the province of Toledo. Preliminary findings indicate that a failure in the LZB rail safety system stopped several trains on the Madrid–Seville line, after which Adif’s control centre reportedly authorized traffic to resume while the Iryo train remained stationary. Transport Minister Óscar Puente called the decision “inexplicable” and said human error was being considered. Spanish authorities have opened an investigation, examining communications, traffic data and the trains’ recorders.
