State unlocks Sh3.5bn for Kenya Power Last Mile project dues

The Kenyan government has approved the release of Sh3.5 billion to settle Kenya Power's outstanding obligations under the Last Mile Connectivity Project (LMCP). National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi authorized the payment to the State Department for Energy on January 29, 2026, as reported by Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakango. The project, launched in 2015 with support from the African Development Bank, World Bank, and other partners, aims to connect rural households to the national grid at a subsidized cost. The first three phases alone connected over 900,000 households at a combined cost of about Sh50.3 billion.
