Storm Austen brings power cuts and travel disruption to southern UK

Storm Austen battered southern England and Wales, leaving more than 15,000 homes without power and disrupting travel; gusts of up to 135 km/h were recorded in Jersey. In Brighton, part of the West Pier, which opened in 1866 and closed to the public in 1975, collapsed into the sea. Fallen trees blocked roads and railway lines, and some ferry services to France were cancelled; the National Grid said power had been restored to more than 60,000 properties. Another storm, Boelo, is forecast to bring strong winds and heavy rain on Saturday, with amber wind warnings for parts of Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland.

Minister Mamadou Sangafowa-Coulibaly officially launched the Tongon solar power plant project on October 23, 2026, in M’Bengué department, Poro region. Led by Tongon Solaire SAS, headed by Abdoul Soukpafolo Koné and funded entirely with Ivorian capital, the CFAF 33 billion project will have a capacity of 52 MWp. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027; the plant is expected to supply around 30,000 households, avoid 39,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually and create nearly 500 construction jobs, with commissioning due by mid-2028. The project supports the national goal of raising renewables to 45% of the energy mix by 2030.
