Strike at AIBD: SYNPAAS warns management against any sanctions

SYNPAAS denounced the systematic physical attendance checks at the Yoff and Diass sites during the general strike, saying they were intended to intimidate striking workers. In a letter to AIBD Director General Cheikh Mamadou Abiboulaye Dièye, the union, led by Secretary General Serigne Moustapha Gaye, warned against disciplinary measures linked to participation in the strike. It disputes management’s authority to declare the strike “illegal” and says it will challenge abusive or punitive salary deductions, warnings, reprimands and suspensions. The union said it remains committed to social dialogue.

Tinubu defends borrowing plans, says investments will expand opportunities for future generations

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu defended new loans from international institutions and banks, arguing that their value should be judged by the infrastructure and economic benefits they create. He cited the Lagos-Calabar, Sokoto-Badagry and Trans-Sahara highways, electricity-grid upgrades and modernised Lagos ports, alongside investments in health, education and vocational training. Tinubu said the Lagos-Calabar highway could cut logistics costs along its route by 15 to 20 per cent, add up to 2 per cent to GDP and create about 100,000 direct jobs and more than 150,000 indirect jobs. He linked infrastructure investment to his goal of a $1 trillion economy by 2030, saying real GDP growth reached 4.43 per cent in the second quarter of 2026 and inflation fell to 14.63 per cent in September.

Benin: €30 million secured for four solar power plants

AXIAN, Benin’s Deposits and Consignments Fund, IFC and Proparco signed €30 million in financing agreements for the IPP50 solar project, announced in Cotonou on October 29, 2026. With a total cost of €45 million, the project will build four plants in Natitingou, Djougou, Parakou and Bohicon, with combined capacity of 62 MWp and estimated annual output of 110 GWh. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2028; the plants are expected to supply electricity to about 383,000 people and prevent nearly 62,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. Benin’s first independent solar power generation project will sell electricity to SBPE under long-term purchase agreements and operate under a 20-year concession.
