Sugar tariff benchmark rises to US$785, but industry says more is needed

South Africa's increase of the sugar reference price from US$680 to US$785 per tonne has been welcomed as relief for local producers. However, growers and Illovo warn that this level may not be enough to curb rising imports, particularly from Brazil. The International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) reviewed proposals from the South African Sugar Association and the Beverage Association, finding that neither adequately balanced support for local producers with consumer interests.
