Syria has begun destroying remnants of a clandestine chemical weapons program created under former President Bashar al-Assad. For the first time since 2014, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) verified the destruction of chemical munitions in Syria. Syrian UN envoy Ibrahim Olabi stated that this destruction process is the first since the liberation from the previous regime and aims to protect the world and the region.
