Taiwan opposition leader calls for ‘reconciliation’ after meeting Xi

Cheng Li-wun, chairperson of the Kuomintang (KMT), met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, where both expressed opposition to Taiwan independence and a desire for a peaceful resolution to the dispute. Cheng emphasized the need to transcend political confrontation and expressed hope for the Taiwan Strait to become a symbol of peace. This meeting marks the highest-level encounter between a Taiwanese leader and Xi since 2015.
