Tanzania: Cash Still King in Public Transport Despite Four-Year Digital Push

In Dar es Salaam, cash remains the dominant payment method in Tanzania's public transport sector, with only 6.8% of fares collected via electronic transactions over four years. According to LATRA Director General Habibu Suluo, 95.3% of 62.18 million passengers paid in cash, while 4.7% used digital payments. Despite policies promoting digital payments, adoption remains low, although the sector has seen significant growth in vehicle licenses and connected buses. Suluo also urged stakeholders to prepare for the rainy season to ensure road safety.
