Tanzania: Opposition official charged with treason

John Pambalu, a member of Chadema’s national council and former head of its youth wing, was charged with treason on Wednesday, an offence punishable by death. The indictment accuses him of seeking to incite the public to obstruct the 2025 general election and of organising protests to intimidate the government. He is the second Chadema official to face treason charges, following party leader Tundu Lissu. Vice-chairman John Heche denounced the charge at a rally in Arusha; Chadema had been barred from the election, which Samia Suluhu Hassan won with 98% of the vote.

2027: OBJ’s son joins ‘Tinubu Must Stay’ movement, backs reform continuity

Olujonwo Obasanjo, son of former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, has joined the Tinubu Movement for Sustainable Governance Foundation, known as “Tinubu Must Stay,” to promote policy continuity and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Welcomed at an event in Abuja, he said he had belonged to the APC since 2014 and wanted to counter what he considers misinformation about reforms, citing the absence of ASUU strikes, student loans and construction projects. The movement’s national coordinator, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, defended Tinubu’s economic reforms and warned that reversing them would undermine investment. Marcel Ngogbehei cited Obasanjo’s economic legacy, including debt relief and telecommunications liberalisation, as a foundation for current development.

2027: INEC deploys AI to check election results before upload

Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is deploying AI to compare electronically entered results with scanned result sheets before publication. INEC ICT director Lawrence Bayode said the system would flag discrepancies for resolution and allow automatic upload when the figures match. The commission has created an AI division and is developing a framework for responsible use, while speakers warned that cloned videos and synthetic voices could threaten election integrity. Meta’s Sade Dada also cited GovGuide Nigeria, a chatbot offering government information in English, Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba that could help voters find reliable election information.

2027: Makinde criticises Tinubu over budget implementation

Oyo State Governor and African Peoples Movement presidential candidate Seyi Makinde criticised the implementation of national budgets under President Bola Tinubu at a town hall meeting in Akure, saying it was unclear which federal budget was being executed. He promised that, if elected in 2027, he would reset Nigeria’s security architecture, economy and political system. Makinde called for a tax system that taxes prosperity rather than poverty and said budget performance in Oyo State had risen from 28–30% to more than 70%, with a January-to-December budget cycle. He also argued that infrastructure projects should serve economic needs rather than political favoritism or regional interests.
