Tax reform: 21 states pass harmonised law as revenue rises 27%, Adesokan says

Olusegun Adesokan, executive secretary of the Joint Revenue Board, said 21 Nigerian states have passed a model law harmonising taxes and levies to tackle multiple taxation and simplify revenue collection. The reform reduces more than 100 subnational taxes, levies and charges to nine categories and prohibits practices including selling tax stickers, setting up roadblocks for tax collection and unauthorised cash collection. Revenue in the 20 states compared rose 27% from January to June 2026 against the same period in 2025, despite lower or zero personal income tax for some earners. Adesokan also said a worker earning 20 million naira annually could save more than 80,000 naira per month under the new framework.
