The History of Kruger National Park in South Africa

Kruger National Park, covering 19,623 square kilometers, was named after Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, president of the Transvaal from 1883 to 1900. As early as 1867, farmers began prohibiting hunting to preserve game on their lands. On March 26, 1898, the area between the Sabie and Crocodile rivers was officially proclaimed as Wildtuin by the government, and James Stevenson Hamilton was appointed as the first warden of the reserve in 1902.
