The Lions in the Ngorongoro Crater are the descendants of 15 animals

The lions in the Ngorongoro Crater, isolated from Serengeti lions, descend from a group of only 15 individuals. A study conducted by Craig Packer and Anne Pusey revealed that this population has suffered from close inbreeding since 1969, after an epidemic decimated many adult males. Through meticulous research, the scientists were able to trace the family tree of these lions over several generations.
