The Netherlands Owes Thousands of Moroccan Families More Than Money

Between 2005 and 2019, the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration falsely branded around 26,000 Moroccan-Dutch parents as welfare cheats, leading to their financial ruin. This scandal, known as the toeslagenaffaire, exposed systemic racial profiling and resulted in the downfall of a government. Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen recently visited Rabat but did not address the fate of affected Moroccan families seeking redress after being forced to return to Morocco.
