The President’s health: A 2027 national security question

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 presidential election, the medical capability of candidates to fulfill presidential responsibilities is becoming crucial. Although the Constitution does not require medical examinations for candidates, it recognizes that medical incapacity can affect the ability to serve. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, seeking another term, is under public scrutiny regarding his health, and it is proposed that an independent panel assess the medical condition of all candidates. Medical fitness should not be confused with physical perfection but should ensure that candidates can effectively perform their constitutional duties.
