The quagga (Equus quagga quagga), a subspecies of plains zebra, was hunted to extinction by European colonists in the 19th century for its skin, meat, and to eliminate competition with livestock. The last quagga died at the Amsterdam Zoo on August 12, 1883. Since 1987, a selective breeding program has been attempting to recreate the species with little success. Photographs and DNA remain.
