Thousands rally in New Delhi to demand India’s election chief resign

Thousands of people marched in New Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over changes to voter lists. Rahul Gandhi led Sunday’s demonstration, organised by the Indian National Congress and its allies, who say the revisions benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party. Opposition parties say more than 130 million names were removed, disproportionately affecting Muslims and other minorities; the Election Commission denies favouring any party and says voters wrongly removed can register again. Authorities deployed police and announced traffic diversions ahead of the rally at Ramlila Maidan, while the BJP accused the opposition of undermining democracy.

Oruruo also pointed to Governor Peter Mbah’s administration’s development programmes and encouraged residents to assess parties’ proposals and records.
