Tingatinga painting tops East African art auction

A work by Tanzanian painter Edward Saidi Tingatinga, Untitled (Landscape with Lion and Bird), sold for 7,631,000 Kenyan shillings (US$58,708) at the second Art Auction East Africa in Nairobi on October 28, 2026. The price was more than four times the high estimate and set a new world record for the artist. Organized by Strauss & Co, the 68-lot sale raised 46.4 million Kenyan shillings (US$356,219), with 90% of lots sold. Works by Simon George Mpata and Sudanese artist Salah Elmur also attracted strong bidding.
