Tinubu approves 500,000 solar lights for South-East households, Deputy Speaker Kalu says

President Bola Tinubu has approved the provision of 500,000 solar lights to rural households in south-eastern Nigeria, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu said. At the launch of the Renewed Hope Light-Up initiative in Bende, Abia State, 26 transformers and 10,000 solar-powered lights and fans were distributed; 42,000 households in the constituency are slated to benefit, with the first delivery expected within two weeks. Kalu said 1,000 units had already been distributed in a pilot and confirmed to be working. State lawmaker Emmanuel Ndubuisi said some communities had been without electricity for about two years, while contractor Solar Systems Nigeria said the project would also offer youth training and empowerment opportunities.

Its five demands concern social investment, purchasing power, public debt and financial transparency, including details on the allocation of 120 billion CFA francs from the CERP.
