To Reduce the Prison Population, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye Grants Clemency to Hundreds of Prisoners

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye granted exceptional clemency to 984 convicts through decrees signed on September 21, 2026, as part of a penitentiary policy aimed at improving detention conditions and promoting social reintegration. Among the beneficiaries, 921 convicts receive a total remission of sentence, along with 21 seriously ill inmates, 19 minors, and one inmate over 65 years old. Additionally, 18 convicts benefit from a partial remission of sentence, and four life-sentenced inmates have their sentences commuted.
