China and Togo signed an agreement in Beijing on October 15 to cancel part of Togo’s debt, following Faure Gnassingbé’s official visit. The amount and terms of the relief have not been disclosed; at the end of 2025, Togo’s obligations to China’s Eximbank stood at 160.64 billion CFA francs. Total public debt was 4,312.64 billion CFA francs, or 61.65% of GDP, and the agreement’s impact will depend on which claims and repayment dates are covered. The debt agreement was one of 13 deals signed by the two countries, which also agreed to strengthen their strategic partnership.
