Transport strike on RN27: civil society fears a humanitarian crisis in Ituri

Traffic has been halted for six days on the RN27 between Bunia and Mahagi, where transporters began a strike on October 17, 2026, to protest ambushes, killings and extortion attributed to armed groups. Hundreds of heavy trucks and public transport vehicles are stranded, including in Mahagi, Ngote and Fataki, while food prices are rising. The Ngote sub-coordination of SOCICO is urging provincial authorities to provide security escorts and accelerate the disarmament of militias. It cited earlier attacks, including passengers being robbed in ambushes at Dhera in July 2026.

The rival sides also disagree over the vice-chancellor appointment, while MST has pledged to pay the ₦10 million annual honorarium arrears owed to Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, who donated the university’s take-off campus. Parents are reportedly concerned for students’ safety as police barricade the campuses.

At least 77 civilians, including children, were killed by ADF rebels in attacks across Mambasa territory, Ituri, in September 2026, according to local civil society groups and human rights advocates. Violence has intensified over the past three months in villages in the Babila Babombi, Bakwanza and Lese Karo chiefdoms, with homes burned and residents forced to flee their homes, fields and livelihoods. More than 80,000 people have been displaced, while the organizations say the current military response is insufficient. Jospin Paluku, head of the New Civil Society of Mambasa, called for additional army units to be deployed.
