Treasury Proposes Tolls on James Gichuru–Rironi Road as Government Seeks New Private Investor

Kenya’s Treasury has proposed tolls on the 25-kilometre James Gichuru–Rironi Road once its Ksh20 billion rehabilitation works are complete. The public-private partnership project note was approved in September 2026, paving the way to select a private partner to finish outstanding works and manage the road’s long-term maintenance. The route runs from Westlands to Rironi through areas including Kangemi, Uthiru, Kinoo and Gitaru, and is intended to cut travel time from one hour to 30 minutes. Construction began in August 2017 but was delayed by funding problems; tolls could raise transport costs for residents in nearby communities.
