DRC: Lucha demands Kabila renounce arms and calls on Tshisekedi to account

In a statement published in Lubumbashi on October 21, 2026, the citizen movement Lucha said the political deal between Joseph Kabila and Félix Tshisekedi after the 2018 elections sacrificed popular sovereignty. It warned that their current confrontation could deepen tensions, cause further deaths and displacement, and divide communities. Lucha condemned Kabila’s announced leadership of a new politico-military movement and called on him to renounce armed struggle. It also said his status as a former president does not exempt him from answering to justice for human rights violations committed during his time in power.

2026 Amended Finance Bill: The Troubling Figures That Really Concern Pastef

Amadou Babo Bâ, national coordinator of Pastef’s executives, says the 2026 amended finance bill cuts investment credits by 555 billion CFA francs, affecting infrastructure, health, education and employment. He describes public finances as worrying as the state’s financing requirement reaches 6,774 billion CFA francs and debt interest rises by 94 billion to 1,285 billion. Babo Bâ also questions why the Presidency’s budget is increasing by 39.4 billion CFA francs while health, education and water projects face cuts. Former minister Abdourahmane Sarr says reducing both petroleum taxes and energy subsidies could protect purchasing power and competitiveness while limiting the budgetary impact.

Diomaye’s maneuvers: The pitfalls Ousmane Sonko must still avoid

Ousmane Sonko and Pastef lawmakers’ rejection of the supplementary finance bill could backfire amid their political confrontation with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Dr. Malao Kanté, a political philosophy researcher at UCAD, says Senegalese people may accuse Sonko of blocking the country for political reasons, while a budget deadlock could threaten salary payments and worsen business failures and layoffs. Minister-counsellor Aldiouma Sow also condemned the move as hypocritical and dangerous for thousands of households. Kanté notes that the president has constitutional options, including governing by ordinance or decree, even if Pastef refuses to approve the bill.
