Trump blames Democrats’ midterm wins for US stock market plunge

Donald Trump blamed the sharp decline in US stocks on Democratic gains in this week’s midterm elections, writing on Truth Social on Thursday. Market analysts instead linked the selloff to concerns that the gains could threaten investment in artificial intelligence data centres; the Nasdaq posted its steepest one-session percentage drop since April 2025. Democrats flipped Republican-held seats in several states, including Maine, Kansas, Iowa and Texas, and made gains in the House of Representatives. Tanzanian opposition leader found guilty of incitement

Tundu Lissu, leader of the opposition Chadema party, was found guilty of incitement by the High Court in Dar es Salaam but acquitted of treason. Detained since April 2025, he was prosecuted over remarks made while campaigning for electoral reforms ahead of Tanzania’s disputed 2025 general election.
