Tshopo: Bafwasende Ebola treatment centre set on fire before inauguration

Part of Bafwasende’s Ebola treatment centre, still under construction, was set on fire by unknown individuals on October 31, days before its planned opening. Epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding says the political participation is an effort to promote responsible healthcare policies and counter misinformation.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has reported more than 10,000 cases and 5,000 deaths since May 2026, doctor Marie-France Shogogo died of Ebola in Beni, North Kivu. Saudi Arabia has barred Kenyans from entering and restricted its citizens from traveling to Nairobi because of the outbreak. Kenya’s Health Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, objected to the measures, saying the country had handled the Ebola situation well and the threat was minimal.
