‘It was fake’: Indian villagers allege forgery behind Adani mine project

Raghunath Khara, a shopkeeper in Balda village in India’s Odisha state, says his thumb impression was forged on a document recording consent to a bauxite mine. The $24m project, developed by Kalinga Alumina, an Adani Enterprises subsidiary, threatens part of Balda Hill’s forest, which at least 10 tribal villages consider sacred. Villagers allege that signatures and thumb impressions from nearly 600 people were collected at council meetings on October 9 of the previous year. Khara says he did not attend Balda’s meeting and was protesting the mine nearby with family members and other villagers.

Dakar: Pape Faye Loses All His Belongings in Heavy Rains and Joins the Flood Victims

Heavy rains on October 4 caused flooding in the Parcelles Assainies district of Dakar, where mason Pape Faye lost all his belongings after a wall of his home collapsed. Injured after falling into the floodwater, he is sheltering at the town hall with around 20 other victims; a woman and her son drowned at his home. Preliminary ANACIM readings recorded up to 142 millimeters of rain in 24 hours in parts of the Dakar region. High population density, low-lying areas and undersized drains hinder water removal, while a climate scientist also cited warming temperatures and a possible influence from El Niño.
