Two Mayors Dispute Control of Likasi Municipality

Two mayors are claiming control of Likasi municipality in Haut-Katanga: Olivier Munongo Msiri Koboko, the incumbent mayor, and Leya Banza, who has been acting as interim mayor since January 2026. Olivier Munongo, who was absent for nine months due to health reasons, was reinstated on September 21 by the Haut-Katanga Court of Appeal, but Leya Banza continues to serve as interim mayor based on a letter from the governor dated January 21, 2026.
