17 dead, 25 injured in stampede at religious gathering

At least 17 people were killed and 25 injured Saturday in a stampede outside a Durga Puja pavilion in Kolkata, eastern India. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendhu Adhikari said the dead included a seven-year-old girl and that six bodies had been identified. A police official said nighttime rain and an announcement caused a commotion among people waiting outside the pavilion, prompting the crowd to push forward and fall. Deadly crowd incidents have also occurred at other mass events in India, including the Kumbh Mela and a cricket celebration in Bengaluru.
