Edo tanker explosion kills six after crash on dilapidated road

At least six people were killed and about 20 injured when a petrol tanker overturned near the Oluku bypass in Edo State after hitting a damaged section of road. Spilled fuel drew residents who tried to collect it despite warnings; a fire later broke out while the remaining fuel was being transferred to another tanker, destroying two markets and about 30 shops. Around 2,000 traders suffered losses, while six cars, two tankers and a truck carrying biscuits were also burnt. Governor Monday Okpebholo promised to rebuild Oluku Market and assist those affected, and criticised the lack of safety precautions during the fuel transfer.

Teachers are demanding unpaid salaries for December 2025 and January 2026, and the school year has yet to begin in Inongo’s public schools since September 1.
