Uganda: Former General Peter Elwelu Arrested over Suspected Subversive Activities

Ugandan authorities arrested Peter Elwelu, a former deputy chief of defence forces and presidential adviser, on Monday evening over suspected efforts to destabilise the Teso region. Acting military spokesperson Chris Magezi said Elwelu is expected to appear in court; the army says it seized 15 firearms, military uniforms and two vehicles, and arrested about 20 former soldiers allegedly linked to him. The arrest came days after defence chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba demoted Elwelu from lieutenant-general to private. His wife, Patricia Apolot, denies the allegations and says he is innocent.
