UK research funded by China front company being sent to Beijing's spies, MI5 warns

MI5 has warned that over 100 UK-linked academics have unwittingly supported China's espionage efforts through funding from a front company, the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI), which is strongly connected to the Chinese Ministry of State Security. The research topics include AI, cybersecurity, and covert communications, aiding MSS espionage capabilities. UK universities have been advised to review ongoing collaborations with CGTRI to prevent further benefits to Chinese intelligence.
