UN commemoration of Durban Declaration: What’s on agenda, who will attend?

The United Nations General Assembly will hold a high-level meeting on September 28, 2026, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration, a comprehensive framework to combat racism and inequality worldwide. Adopted in 2001 at the World Conference Against Racism in Durban, the 153-page document addresses racism, xenophobia, and the oppression of Indigenous peoples, urging member states to take measures to eradicate these issues. A political declaration is expected to be adopted at the meeting. The declaration also acknowledges historical injustices like slavery, apartheid, and genocide, and affirms the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.
