UN: Macky Sall withdraws as Donald Trump goes back on the offensive

The UN Security Council’s first straw poll to select the next secretary-general, held on October 16, showed that all seven candidates received at least two discouragements from permanent members. Rebeca Grynspan leads with nine encouragements but also received two discouragements; Macky Sall received three despite support from two permanent members. Media reports and official comments allege that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has assisted Yemen’s Houthis with training, intelligence, tactical guidance and targeting support for drone and missile attacks. The reports say Iranian backing contributed to a Houthi offensive in September that brought Yemen’s Red Sea coastline and the strategically important Bab al-Mandeb strait under the group’s control. In recent weeks, the Houthis have launched dozens of drones and missiles at Saudi Arabia, including an attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh that killed 13 people, and have targeted energy facilities and oil tankers. If confirmed, the allegations could further heighten tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
