UN Security Council: DRC Insists on Better African Representation with Two Permanent Seats and Full Prerogatives

At the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Democratic Republic of Congo's Prime Minister Judith Suminwa called for reforming the Security Council to better represent Africa, demanding two permanent seats with full prerogatives, including veto rights, and two non-permanent seats. She emphasized Africa's demographic and geopolitical importance, noting its under-representation despite the African Union's inclusion in the G20. The African position is supported by the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration, which advocate for a reform to enhance the Council's legitimacy and effectiveness.
