UN warns El Nino could be ‘off the charts’, strongest in decades

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned that El Nino is set to intensify to exceptional levels in the coming months and persist into early 2027. Forecasts indicate nearly a 100 percent likelihood that El Nino will continue through February, potentially leading to worsening droughts, floods, and extreme heat globally. The WMO stated that this event could be the strongest recorded since monitoring began four decades ago.
