Zambia was elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for a three-year term from 2027 to 2029, receiving 177 of 181 valid votes—the highest score in the ballot held in New York. It is one of 15 new members and will join Burundi, Ghana and Nigeria as the African representatives elected without opposition. President Hakainde Hichilema welcomed the result as a sign of international confidence and recognition of Zambia’s efforts on human rights. The new members take office on January 1, 2027.
