United Nations Human Rights Commissioner Türk asks Washington to lift sanctions imposed against Cuba

Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, urged the United States to immediately lift sanctions against Cuba. He warned that the expansion of sanctions, including fuel restrictions since early 2026, causes shortages of essential medicines and worsens the humanitarian crisis. Infant mortality has doubled (9.9 per 1,000 births) and childhood cancer survival rates have dropped from 85% to 65%. Daily blackouts now frequently exceed 20 hours.
