United States - Tennessee: Christa Pike, first woman executed in 200 years, on Wednesday

Christa Pike, a 50-year-old woman sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville, Tennessee, is scheduled to be executed Wednesday morning in Nashville, becoming the first woman to be executed in the state in over 200 years. The Supreme Court and the Tennessee governor refused to grant a stay or commute her sentence, despite her lawyers' expressions of regret. Pike, who suffered from bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress, was convicted for killing a 19-year-old woman, with her boyfriend sentenced to life imprisonment.
