After visiting with Prosecutor General Firmin Mvonde Mambu, Ngefa called for assessments of inmates who may qualify for release, including on humanitarian grounds and based on medical reports. The delegation reported severe overcrowding, deteriorating facilities and limited access to care; some women said they shared one bed with seven others.

Trafficking: Titi Atiku laments Nigerian girls becoming a ‘nuisance’ abroad

Titi Atiku Abubakar, chairperson of NACTAL’s board of trustees, said in Abuja that Nigerian girls going abroad were becoming a “nuisance” in host countries and that international partners were supporting efforts to keep them in Nigeria. She urged civil society organisations to work together against trafficking, abuse and child labour, noting that NACTAL works with about 286 groups. Abdulganiu Abubakar said NACTAL’s review of the 2025 US Trafficking in Persons Report found that government, partner and civil society contributions were underrepresented, including support to refurbish about 10 NAPTIP shelters. He also cited inadequate funding, weak political will and shortcomings in prosecuting cases, particularly high-profile ones.
