The World Health Organisation estimates 600 million annual cases of foodborne illness causing 420,000 deaths. In Nigeria, health experts warn that unsafe food severely harms livelihoods and weakens regional economies. In Oyo State, salmonellosis, acute gastroenteritis from E. coli, and cholera are the three foodborne illnesses causing the highest burden. Public Health Physician Dr Ifeoluwa Odedina noted these diseases lead to most outbreaks, hospitalisations and deaths.
