‘Unstoppable’ Rumesh revives Sri Lanka’s glory, one javelin throw at a time

Rumesh Pathirage, a young Sri Lankan athlete from Kalutara, won the men's javelin gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, marking Sri Lanka’s first athletics gold in 20 years. Since February 2026, he has won nearly all his competitions, being the only thrower to breach the 92-meter mark twice in a season and the only Sri Lankan to win the Diamond League final. At 23, he now aims for the Asian Games title, having established himself as a top international performer with record-breaking throws.
