Nairobi-Thika Railway Upgrade: Stations, Route and Key Details

Kenya Railways plans to upgrade the 57-kilometre commuter line between Nairobi Central and Thika, with interventions at 15 stations under the World Bank-backed Kenya Urban Mobility Improvement Project. Eight stations are operational, four existing stations are inactive, and three new halts are proposed at KPCU, Maili Saba and Kalimoni in Juja. The work is expected to repair railway infrastructure, improve safety and accessibility, and add access roads, cycling paths, walkways and street lighting near stations. The World Bank has committed USD 500 million to modernise the corridor, while Kenya Railways is developing a maintenance workshop at Makadara.

A high-level African Union Commission mission is in Lomé through October 22, 2026, to turn the Kampala Declaration’s commitments into national actions under the 2026–2031 CAADP framework. Talks between Togolese officials and AU representatives focus on agricultural productivity, food security, climate resilience and sustainable management of natural resources. The government plans to draw on ProMAT, whose cumulative support from the West African Development Bank reached 60 billion CFA francs after an additional 40 billion was approved in June 2026. Adopted in January 2025, the Kampala Declaration targets a 45% increase in Africa’s agrifood production, a tripling of intra-African agricultural trade and a halving of post-harvest losses by 2035.
