Federal Judge David O. Carter rejected the Justice Department’s bid to set aside ballots cast by more than 20,000 California voters it said might not be citizens. He called the move, filed after early voting began ahead of the November 3 midterms, election interference and defended the state’s constitutional election procedures. The federal government had initially alleged California had 190,000 illegal voters before revising the figure to 20,000. In neighboring Nevada, a similar claim involving 16,000 alleged non-citizen voters fell to zero after verification.
