US midterm elections: Democrats win Senate and House

Democrats won the US midterm elections, taking control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The results tracker showed Democrats with 54 Senate seats to Republicans’ 44, with 33 of the 35 contested seats counted. In the House, Democrats had won 237 seats to Republicans’ 139, with 376 of 435 seats counted. Donald Trump said the Iran war was “largely” to blame for his party’s losses as counting continued in some races.

Iran War: Trump Consults Advisers on Pete Hegseth’s Future as Pentagon Chief

After the Republican defeat in the November 3 midterm elections, Donald Trump asked several advisers whether Pete Hegseth should remain as secretary of defense. Hegseth, Pentagon chief since January 2025, has played a central role in the war against Iran, launched by a joint U.S.-Israeli offensive on February 28, and reportedly dismissed or forced out at least 17 senior officers. Ron DeSantis has been mentioned as a possible successor, while some advisers believe Hegseth could be blamed for the defeat; Trump and the White House have nevertheless voiced confidence in him. Democrats retook both the House and Senate, and several Republicans have cited the war against Iran as a factor in their loss, which Trump acknowledged.

Hamzat Seeks a Stronger Private-Sector Role in Lagos Development

Lagos State Deputy Governor and APC candidate in the 2027 governorship election, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, called for stronger public-private collaboration, higher public revenue and continued infrastructure investment. Speaking at an investor engagement organized by Aztran on Lagos Island, he cited the rollout of 11 Oracle ERP modules, which he said improved accountability and internally generated revenue, as well as the state’s rail projects. Hamzat said Lagos was reviewing waste collection funding so private operators could receive direct government payments, while subsidies would continue. Aztran Co-Managing Partner Victor Aluyi urged investors to mobilize capital to address infrastructure funding gaps in transport, power, housing, waste management and logistics.

IMF: National Assembly Complicates Matters for Bassirou Diomaye Faye

Senegal’s National Assembly rejected the supplementary budget bill on November 3, complicating President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s negotiations with the IMF over a program worth about $2.2 billion. Economist Thierno Thioune said the lack of a revised budget leaves the government without a formal framework for its fiscal path and could delay financing if the deadlock continues. The bill would have raised the deficit forecast from 5.4% to 7.6% of GDP, an estimated gap of about 550 billion CFA francs, and accounted for nearly 790 billion CFA francs in energy subsidies in 2026. A swift passage of a new bill could limit delays to a few weeks, while a two- to three-month deadlock might require a waiver from the IMF’s executive board.
