US reading scores hit near-25-year low in latest global assessment

Reading scores among 15-year-olds in the United States have fallen by 14 points since 2022, reaching their lowest level in 25 years, according to the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). Approximately 25.7% of US students were classified as low performers in reading, while only 13.3% were identified as top performers. Michael Kieffer, a professor at New York University, noted that the US has the widest inequality in reading scores among the 90 participating countries.
