US Supreme Court to hear case on race in school admissions

The US Supreme Court has agreed to consider a challenge to admissions at four selective public middle schools in Montgomery County, Maryland. The Association for Education Fairness says the process discriminates against Asian American students in favor of Black and Latino students; lower courts dismissed the case, finding that Asian American students were not underrepresented. Introduced in the 2021–2022 school year, the system screens students for academic potential and uses a lottery to assign places in enriched programs. The court is expected to hear arguments in the coming months and rule by June.
