Keisha Lance Bottoms won Tuesday’s Georgia gubernatorial election, becoming the first Black woman to hold the office in the United States. The former Atlanta mayor, who served from 2018 to 2022, defeated Republican Rick Jackson, a health-care billionaire. Her victory marks the return of a Democratic governor in Georgia after more than two decades and reflects a broader Democratic upswing, also seen in Senator Jon Ossoff’s reelection. Jackson had the support of Donald Trump, while incumbent governor Brian Kemp was barred from seeking another term.
