Ballon d’Or 2026: ‘He’s one of them’ — What Mbappé said after Harry Kane’s win

Harry Kane won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, finishing ahead of runner-up Kylian Mbappé and third-place Lamine Yamal. Mbappé said Kane deserved the award and was “one of” the great players audiences came to see. Despite scoring 25 La Liga goals, 15 in the Champions League and 10 at the 2026 World Cup, Mbappé won no major trophies with Real Madrid, and France did not win the World Cup. He congratulated Kane before the striker took the stage, having arrived at the ceremony after scoring twice in Real Madrid’s 2-1 El Clásico win over Barcelona at Camp Nou.

Kylian Mbappe loses Chinese sponsors after calling Mao a ‘Chinese dictator’

Kylian Mbappe has lost two major Chinese sponsors after a video circulated in which he referred to Mao Zedong as “some guy – I think he’s a Chinese dictator,” apparently discussing a meme featuring his face. Dongpeng Beverage and Mengniu announced that they were immediately ending their partnerships with the French captain, citing their opposition to words or actions that offend Chinese people. Jokes about Mao, China’s founding leader who died in 1976, remain taboo in the country. The Real Madrid forward had previously been hugely popular among Chinese fans.

2026 Ballon d’Or: After Missing Out, Mbappé Accused of Trying to Force His Win

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane won the 2026 Ballon d’Or ahead of Kylian Mbappé, who finished second, at the ceremony held on October 26 at the London Palladium. Kane scored 73 goals for club and country during the 2025-26 season, becoming the first Englishman to win the award since Michael Owen in 2001. On Canal+, journalist Bertrand Latour criticized Mbappé for allegedly trying too hard to influence voters, including by saying Africa was important to him. Latour urged him to win matches and trophies instead of pressuring people for the award.
